“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
Steve Jobs

INTENT
As designers we learn how things are made and how to join, use and fix materials. We embrace challenges and use our creativity to plan, make and review projects.
How our curriculum is connected through our values:

As designers and makers we produce ideas and products that we are proud of. |
IMPLEMENTATION
- At least one design project completed each term.
- Progression of practical skills taught across the school.
- Building blocks slides are used in each DT session with prior learning, new learning outcomes and subject specific vocabulary shared with the children.
- Lessons are sequential – following the design process.
- The steps to the design process are recorded in sketchbooks/booklets/Seesaw.
- Final work is shared and valued in class or on Seesaw.
- Designers and products are explored to educate children in how items have impacted on the world, how design has developed through time and also to promote their enthusiasm for design.
- Cross-curricular links are made with other subjects to deepen the children’s understanding of their world and to give real-world situations for children to practise their key skills of maths, science, computing and art within a D.T. context.
- Assessment is ongoing throughout each session to inform the planning of lesson activities and differentiation. Summative assessment is completed at the end of each project, where D.T. objectives have been covered.
IMPACT
Our children improve their confidence and demonstrate a wide range of practical life skills. They are expected to leave Huntington Primary Academy with at least age-related expectations. They recognise the impact design technology has on the world around them, reflecting on their knowledge of designers and technology that they have gained in their time at Huntington Primary. Some will be inspired to become future designers, which in turn make an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.
