“Without mathematics there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.”

INTENT

At Huntington Primary Academy our Maths curriculum equips pupils with the vital skills required to progress through each stage of their education. With a focus on:

  • embedding basic skills
  • fluency
  • investigations and problem solving

How our curriculum is connected through our values:

As mathematicians we secure basic skills to help us to contribute to our community and prepare for our future lives.
As mathematicians we embrace challenges in our learning.
As mathematicians we develop independence in the way we apply skills and learning and encourage resilience to persevere with a task.
As mathematicians we succeed in developing core skills and challenging ourselves personally.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • We follow the White Rose Maths scheme small steps approach, focusing on the concrete, pictorial and abstract strategies. We supplement this with additional resources as appropriate to meet the needs of all pupils.
  • Each morning children start their day with a basic skills session called UFOs (Useful Four Operations) activities where they revisit previously learned content and practice calculation fluency.
  • During daily maths lessons children work through a progressive curriculum where adaptive teaching methods and interventions are used to support all learners.
  • Teach Active is utilised on a regular basis during lessons to add variety, aid learning and retention; promote physical activity and personal wellbeing.
  • We teach and closely monitor the learning of times tables, supported by TT Rockstars.
  • NFER assessments and past SATs papers are used to enable us to quality assure the White Rose scheme we are using and to highlight areas of focus to target in subsequent morning maths lessons and interventions.
  • Our own curriculum allows us to maintain coverage of the National Curriculum using the White Rose Scheme and NFER assessments to support.
  • Seesaw is used as a platform to evidence childrens’ learning and to communicate learning with parents.
  • The application of maths skills is planned for in other areas of the curriculum, such as science, DT, PE and art.
  • The academy encourages enterprise with children taking the lead in organising events, such as our very own fundraising ‘Rainbow Day’.
  • Daily maths lessons begin with chanting and recall followed by fluency and reasoning activities. A range of adaptive teaching strategies are used to meet the needs of all pupils including I do, We do, You do.
