“The need of the moment is not one religion, but mutual respect and tolerance of the devotees of the different religions.”

Mahatma Gandhi

INTENT

Through Religious Education we aim to foster a sense of belonging and promote an appreciation of diversity, encouraging tolerance and understanding of different faiths and worldviews within a respectful and inclusive learning environment.

How our curriculum is connected through our values:

As theologians we believe that learning about faith, belief and identity should be rooted in respect, inclusion and a community where everyone feels they belong.
As citizens of our community and wider world, we seek to learn about diversity and difference and aim to develop our own understanding, sense of spiritually, kindness, respect and tolerance.
As theologians we encourage each other to be proud of our own beliefs and be respectful of others.
As theologians we are committed to empowering each other to approach the world with wonder, respect and a lifelong love of learning about themselves and others.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • The curriculum will follow the 2021-2026 City of York Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.
  • Teaching units sequenced to ensure  content taught is progressive and built upon prior knowledge.
  • Weekly sessions of RE taught across the academy.
  • In FoundationStage, RE is experiential, creative and reflective. Children are given time to think ,talk about and consider the world around them and the beliefs of others within their community.
  • Three main world religions taught in KS1  -Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
  • Four main world religions taught in KS2 – Christianity, Islam, Hindu dharma and Judaism.
  • Building block slides at the beginning of each lesson provide children with the opportunity to recap key knowledge.
  • Subject vocabulary is explicitly taught and modelled.

IMPACT

Religious Education at our school fosters a deep understanding and respect for a diverse range of faiths and beliefs, both religious and non-religious. Learning experiences support our pupils to develop empathy, tolerance, and a strong sense of identity. By nurturing curiosity and encouraging open dialogue, pupils gain the confidence to ask meaningful questions about the world around them, contributing to their spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development and preparing them to thrive in a diverse and ever-changing society.

Please note, should you wish to discuss your right to withdraw your child from all or part of the RE curriculum, please contact the school on 01904 947180 or email parents@hpa.pmat.academy.
