“You can make anything by writing.”
C.S. Lewis

INTENT
By the time our children leave primary school we want them to be confident, competent writers and:
- be accurate in grammar, phonics and spelling
- be able to write for a variety of reasons
- to have a love of writing
- be able to express ideas and meaning through writing
- to be proud of their writing
How our curriculum is connected through our values:
![]() |
As writers we are able to express ourselves with purpose and creativity, fostering a sense of belonging to our community, city and the wider world. |

As writers we are able to embrace the opportunity and challenge to develop our own unique voice and express ideas, celebrating diversity and individuality. |
![]() |
As writers we are encouraged to build resilience, independence and confidence in our voice, taking ownership of our ideas and expression. |
![]() |
As writers we are supported to achieve success personally, creatively, and academically by developing the skills to express ourselves with confidence, imagination, and precision, fostering a lifelong love of writing and a strong foundation for future learning. |
IMPLEMENTATION
- The writing journey starts in EYFS where the children are provided with a range of resources and activities that provide opportunities for children to explore our world, use imaginative play and read quality texts. This allows the children to develop their language as emergent writers and builds confidence with vocabulary and language for writing.
- Through books and from real life experiences the children then begin to develop letter formation and recognition using their phonics skills which then develops to sentence writing.
- A clear writing process is then used throughout Year 1 to Year 6 where all teachers follow the same structure when planning and delivering writing to help all children to succeed.
- Children are given the chance to share their work which gives the task purpose and celebrates their achievements as writers.
- Once the children have confidence with the subject knowledge required to produce the genre and a good understanding of the structure and features needed, teachers will then provide the opportunity for modelled and shared writing using their planning to help them.
- Throughout the writing process all children are given the opportunity to edit their work independently, after teacher feedback (either verbally or using the marking policy) or from paired discussion. On occasion, children may then copy up and present the final pieces.
IMPACT
We believe that our approach to the delivery and teaching of English builds confident individuals who have developed the level of writing ability that allows them to be successful in their aspirations and to have developed skills that they can build upon in secondary school and beyond. Through applying consistent high expectations of English across the whole curriculum and the whole academy, children are encouraged to apply their writing skills within all work. As all aspects of the English curriculum are essential to all subjects, cross curricular writing shows the children feel confident to transfer their skills, showing consolidation and in-depth understanding of English objectives. Also, this shows that the children communicate in various written forms showing an understanding of the purpose of writing, the value that it has and a sense of pride in the writing that they can confidently produce.
