“A different language is a different vision of life.”

Federico Fellini

INTENT

Through learning French, children have the opportunity to speak and listen in another language and develop their cultural awareness. We aim to develop their confidence, knowledge and skills to converse on a basic level in another language.

How our curriculum is connected through our values:

As learners of French, we build connections, deepen cultural understanding, and grow as confident global citizens.
As learners of French, embrace different cultures and approach new experiences with enthusiasm.
As learners of French, we value encouraging respect for different cultures and aspire to build strong foundations for lifelong language learning.
As learners of French, we value succeeding as we build language skills, cultural understanding, and confidence that support both our educational journey and personal growth.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • We use the Primary Language Network Scheme to teach French across Key Stage 2.
  • The scheme is built around four progressive stages (S1–S4) aligned with learners’ development, covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing through sequenced lessons that revisit and build on previous knowledge.
  • Emphasis is placed on developing “language detective” skills including sound-spelling links, memory, bilingual dictionary use, and sentence structure awareness.
  • Seasonal specials, festivals, and cross-curricular resources foster cultural awareness and celebrate language learning across the school

IMPACT

Our French curriculum ensures that pupils develop strong foundational skills in French, enabling them to communicate with increasing fluency and confidence. It nurtures cultural awareness, supports academic success, and lays the groundwork for continued language learning beyond primary school.
