At Huntington Primary Academy, we believe that all of our children can become fluent readers and writers and it is essential that our approach to teaching this is accessible for all learners. We teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in Early Years and follow the Little Wandle Progression which ensures children build on their knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school.

As a result, our children are able to tackle any unfamiliar words as they read. We ensure children read confidently for meaning and regularly for pleasure. We couple our phonics lessons with carefully matched phonetically decodable books online from Collins Big Cat books for Little Wandle and we teach children to read with three reading practice sessions a week.
