“Where words fail, music speaks.”

Hans Christian Anderson

As musicians we will be inspired to develop a love of a range of musical styles and genres. We aim to succeed in becoming confident  when singing, composing and performing.

INTENT

As musicians, we explore, interpret and respond to music from a range of styles and cultures. We compose, perform and reflect, nurturing a lifelong love of music and confidence in our musical abilities.

How our curriculum is connected through our values:

As musicians, we develop a sense of belonging to the school, community, and city by sharing our musical talents, participating in shared performances, and connecting with diverse audiences.
As musicians, we embrace opportunities to express our individuality, navigate creative challenges, and discover our unique artistic potential.
As musicians, we will develop independence through individual practice, resilience through overcoming performance challenges, and respect through shared ensemble work and appreciation of diverse musical expressions.
As musicians we will succeed through sharing our creativity, developing disciplinary skills and growing in personal confidence.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • Children in KS1 and KS2 are taught following a variety of projects from the Charanga Model Music scheme of work, which cover different areas of the music curriculum.
  • In the Early Years, music is incorporated consistently into daily routines and is used to enhance teaching of the core curriculum. There are dedicated weekly curriculum music lessons on the school timetable for all year groups. Provision is between 45 and 60 minutes.
  • From EYFS to Year 2 children access the whole class ensemble with untuned percussion instruments and then in KS2 they learn recorders, glockenspiels and ukuleles for whole class activities.
  • All our curriculum subjects follow an inclusive approach and teachers adapt the curriculum using various different strategies including: pre teaching, adult support, variations on instruments used and use of ear defenders.
  • There are weekly singing assemblies for all students led by school staff. They use Sing Up as a resource to explore and learn a range of musical genres.
  • Through our curriculum music lessons, we look for ways that the children can perform and demonstrate their skills. Classes have performed to different year groups on instruments including ukuleles and Japanese drumming.

IMPACT

Music enriches the lives of people, and so we wish to involve as many children as possible in musical activities. Through the rich opportunities that our music curriculum offers, when children leave Huntington Primary School they will have built a love of music and have increased levels of self-confidence. The different genres of music they are exposed to will provide great inspiration to help them with their own compositions, developing them as a listener, creator and performer. Impact is assessed through a multi-faceted approach including performances, informal observations in lessons, opportunities through practical music-making, listening to children talking and playing, and watching children respond. Evidence is built up by means of sound and video recordings taken at the beginning and end of units, or when there is something significant to note. These should show development of musical skills, particularly singing, and improvement in social skills such as cooperation and team-work.
